To help clear London's air and improve health, the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is expanding across all London boroughs from 29 August 2023. From this date vehicles that do not meet Euro 5 Petrol or Euro 6 Diesel emission standards will have to pay a £12.50 daily charge.

Most cars purchased during the last 10-15 years were diesel engine versions, this was down to the purported fuel efficiency and emissions data used to market these vehicles when new. Many people living in and around London are now having to decide what to do as their older diesel cars will soon fall foul of the new ULEZ zone.

ULEZ expansion has caused a significant shift in trends of the used car market in vehicles around 10 years old, with Euro 5 diesel cars seeing substantial declines in value and Euro 5 petrol equivalents becoming highly sort after as replacements. A quick search on Auto Trader will reveal that there is a shortage of both Petrol and Automatic models of cars in this category. The good news is that over 90% of cars sources from Japanese car auctions are both Petrol and Automatic, and can offer superior value for money when compared to what is on offer in the UK. These Japanese imports also tend to have much lower mileage and are usually in very good condition with only one or two owners from new.
